Early Poems (Dover Thrift Editions)
Published in Paperback by Dover Pubns (January, 1994)
Author: William Butler Yeats
Average review score:

Excellent Introduction to Yeats
As a student, who is hard on cash, I found that this collection of poems by the great Irish author and poet W.B. Yeats was definitely an excellent collection to buy and read. This collection encompasses all of the collections written by the young poet during his early period. Particularly notable are "The Shepherd to His Beloved", "The Lake Isle of Innisfree" and other poems that have become immortal over the years. There are also poems that deal with Irish myths and legends and several poems written as dialogues or plays. This is an excellent collection that will introduce you to the worldd of Yeats if you haven't yet been introduced and further your understanding of this Irish genius.

Early Poems (Dover Thrift Editions)
Published in Paperback by Dover Pubns (February, 1996)
Author: Ezra Pound
Average review score:

A good, small book.
I recommend this edition of Pound's early poetry. It is very cheap and has a number of gems, including Pound's rendering from the Old English of The Seafarer, as well as a few Italian songs and Sestina: Altaforte, one of my favorites. Pound was acquainted with the musical heights of Greek and Italian lyric and did the best he could to transmit that into English, with varying success. Also see his ABC of Reading.

Early Poems (Penguin Twentieth-Century Classics)
Published in Paperback by Penguin USA (Paper) (December, 1998)
Authors: Edna St. Vincent Millay and Holly Peppe
Average review score:

It's an important and lovely book.
This book is a lovely way to return to Edna St. Vincent Millay's early radiant poetry or to read it for the first time. Editor Holly Peppe's important and knowlegable introduction answers many lingering questions about Millay's place as a poet, her experience as a woman, and her originality as an artist. Highly recommended!

Early Poems, 1935-1955
Published in Paperback by New Directions Publishing (December, 1973)
Authors: Octavio Paz and Muriel Rukeyser
Average review score:

A great poet's early work
"Early Poems 1935-1955," by Octavio Paz, is an excellent collection of work from this important Latin American writer. This is a bilingual edition, with Paz' Spanish originals on each even-numbered page, and English translations on each odd-numbered page. The translations represent the collaborative work of several individuals: Muriel Rukeyser (who also wrote a foreword), Paul Blackburn, Lysander Kemp, Denise Levertov, and William Carlos Williams.

The poems in this book represent a mix of short, haiku-like verses; prose poems; and longer poems. Although Paz is a distinctive and original talent, some of his work seems to echo the spirit of such earlier poets as William Blake, Walt Whitman, and Stephen Crane.

Paz often writes about writing and language, often with a metaphysical, reality-warping perspective. His poems include a multicultural mix of interesting references: Polyphemus, Buddha, Tlaloc, the Tower of Babel, etc. He uses much striking imagery, and frequently his writing has a prophetic tone.

There are many fine poems in this collection, but I was particularly impressed by "The prisoner," his stunning homage to the Marquis de Sade: "The letters of your name are still a scar that will not heal, / the tattoo of disgrace on certain faces." If you are interested in Latin American literature or 20th century poetry, I recommend this book.

Early Scotland: The Picts, the Scots and the Welsh of Southern Scotland
Published in Textbook Binding by Octagon Books (November, 1974)
Author: Hector Munro Chadwick
Average review score:

Excellent view of pre-Medieval Scotland.
This history of Scotland was actually finished after the author's death by his widow. The book primarily is about the Picts, giving a great deal of information on them, including an in-depth analysis of the king-lists. Also included are notes on the Irish traditions of Picts living in Ireland(!), the kingdom of Dalraida, and the British kingdoms of southern Scotland.

The first chapters of this book are rather dry, and written in a very academic manner. However, as the book goes on, the author does succeed in grabbing the reader's interest. Some of the details given in this book are out of date, as it was published in 1974, but the depth of information makes this book well worth reading.

As an added bonus, this book contains a large, fold-out map of Scotland, so that you can link up references to places with their actual location.

5 stars!
